Craig Williams MP has welcomed Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s announcement today that the UK Government will quash wrongful convictions for Post Office postmasters.
The Prime Minister today announced that the Government will introduce a blanket exoneration of postmasters who have been wrongly convicted under the Post Office Horizon Scandal. This legislation will overturn hundreds of convictions, clearing the names of many people who have had their lives ruined. The Government has committed to ensuring these convictions are overturned this year, meaning victims do not need to wait years and years for the justice they deserve.
Once this legislation is passed and convictions have been quashed, individuals will be entitled to at least £600,000 in compensation to rebuild their lives. Compensation payments will also be expedited for the trailblazers who took the first legal action against the Post Office.
Welcoming today’s announcement, Craig Williams MP said:
“Many residents within Montgomeryshire will have seen the ITV drama Mr Bates vs The Post Office over the new year. This has brought to life one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in this nation’s history.
“The Prime Minister’s announcement today therefore of a blanket exoneration is brilliant news, quashing the convictions of all postmasters who were wrongfully prosecuted and convicted. This will clear people’s names and provide the justice they richly deserve, as well as ensuring swifter access to compensation for all concerned.
“I thank the Prime Minister for finally delivering justice to all who have been so badly affected, and to the campaigners who have worked tirelessly over the years.”
